hipsterPDA v2.0

Chris turned me on to [Getting Things Done (GTD)](http://www.davidco.com “David Allen’s Getting Things Done”), and in turn the [hipsterPDA](http://www.43folders.com/2005/06/the_diy_planner.html “HipsterPDA”). I laughed at the hipster the first time I saw it, but the more I tried to find a digital solution that suited me, the more I decided paper was a good idea. I built my own and tried it out for a while, but it soon became obvious that is was not going to make it. So i decided to come up with my own Mod. Behold, the [hipster2.0](http://web.omnidrive.com/APIServer/public/QXD0xoofpH710LBqw4BoJiHf/PDA_temp.pdf “My PDF Template”)…

Post-its example
Moleskine image

It’s a [Moleskine](http://www.moleskine.com/eng/_interni/catalogo/Cat_int/catalogo_pocket.htm “The Moleskine site”) notebook with 3×5 preprinted post-it notes for the different lists, projects, notes, etc… from the [original hipsterPDA templates](http://www.43folders.com/2005/06/the_diy_planner.html “original templates from diyplanner”). I just made a template to stick the post-its to and then layed out the pages. I’ll put the full pdf up here when I’m finished tweaking it. It is sortable, changeable, and compact. It also holds up to my pocket better and can hold my pencil to keep it handy.

UPDATE: I found my PDF template and updated the link.

Are you printing on 3×5 Post-It’s? If so, do they come in a sheet or do you print them individually? Thanks. –Thom

  2. Thom, I created a 3-up template that I stick the post-its to and then I run that sheet through the printer. It’s a little tedious but you can crank them out pretty quick if you print multiple templates. Check out my templates in the post to see how I did it. — Steve

I tried this with my inkjet printer (HP Deskjet 960c) and it works fine. I don’t dare to try this on my Laser Printer (Brother 1540), though – has anybody been bolder than me? Birgit

  4. Birgit, I print mine through my HP 4050 all the time. The post-its stay put nicely. But that’s just my experience.

  5. Joaquim Carvalho says:

This is great!. Best Hispter PDA tech by far. It allows you to use a nice notebook with complete freedom, updating, sorting, inserting pages — beautifull. How do we know when you add more templates to your file?

  6. Thom says:

Steve, Thanks for the info. I have printed many of these and added them to my Moleskine. Again, thanks for the great idea. –Thom

  7. Joaquim, I’d be happy to update the template with anything you need. But in the meantime, I’ll work on getting all of the DIYplanner pages in my template in the next few days and repost.

  8. Birgit says:

Seems it does not work for Brother Laser Printers… The Post ITs come out with an ugly fold each – and that was a success, after several attempts with misplaced printing and a bad paper jam. Pretty robust printer, though. Think it’s probably a twofold problem: on the one hand I have A4 sized paper and thus it is tricky to position anyway. And my Brother has a sharp curving paper way. Just to let you know, if anyone else from Europe wonders… I’lI use my Deskjet in the future for the best GTD hack I ever found! Birgit

Much Gratitude! I’d given up on the Hipster because I just couldn’t get around how handy the Moleskine makes everything. Now I get both! I am way looking forward to see how many things can get moved into this format. BTW, can you describe the process you went through to get these? Maybe I could contribute some templates I’ve found around the web to the Mole-PostIt format (or should it be the Posteskine format?) I’ve found some really interesting pages I’d like to move to this size (like the sundial page found here. Anyway, I’ve got standard tools at home I could help with: OpenOffice, Photoshop, Acrobat, Illustrator, etc. I can get Scribus too. Let me know Drew

  10. I posted the original InDesign CS and Illustrator 10 files for you to mod to your liking. Thanks for all the great response!

  11. Birgit says:

Any chance to get the files for InDesign 2.0 and Illustrator 10 – I can’t afford an update atm. Birgit

  12. Birgit, I updated the Illustrator link in my other posts to download Illustrator 10. Hope that helps.

  13. Birgit says:

Steve, I had some problems first to convince Illustrator to open the file because it tried to find the linked file diyp2_hpda_1up.pdf on your pc but finally I worked it out. Thanks a lot. I tried to adjust the paper size and it works fine. I also managed to copy layers and link to other pages in that pdf-file. Don’t have time atm to re-do it cleanly for a4 format, but when done I’ll send you the ai-file.

  14. A very nice mod indeed!

HipsterPDA and Moleskines: Combining two good things

I’m mixed on this hybrid Hipster-Moleskine. I own precisely one Moleskine, and it’s a nice luxury item, I can’t imagine using them for the daily grind of planning. They have the portability down, excellent paper… it’s just that price issue. For h…

  16. kimba says:

hi there quick (maybe dumb) question — the 3×5 post it.. is it like the little square sheets that only have the adhesive glue on one edge of the paper? Or is the entire sheet sticky? Was curious how you got it to adhere to the moleskin page otherwise unless you just glued it?

    thanks in advance :)

  17. kimba: the post-its are sticky on only one side just like the little square ones. But when you put it in your book they stay put fairly well anyway. Glue and/or tape are total no-nos! The whole thing about the post-its is the fact that you can pull them out to rearrange them or replace them.

  18. Yves says:

Hey– great idea to use post-its… but I might have one better. 3M sells post-it glue sticks… I’m going to try it out and I’ll let you know how it works… Staples sells them here:
    http://www.staples.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/StaplesProductDisplay?storeId=10001&catalogId=10051&langId=-1&productId=17759&cmArea=SEARCH

  19. Yves – Good luck with that one. I tried the glue sticks and the pages peeled off after about 15 minutes. Maybe you will have better luck than I did though, we’re in dry Arizona weather here so the glue was probably dry before it even hit the paper.

  20. Mike Rohde says:

    Steve, excellent idea!

I’m considering moving to a Moleskine 2006 weekly planner, and I think this moveable system might be the perfect match. By using a planner, I can then have important personal dates in place along with all of my contextualized task lists and so on.

Probably the only think I’d miss would be alarms, though by using paper, I’d probably need to check my schedule/tasks regularly, to solve that issue.

  21. Mike – I do anything with reminders in my iCal and I have a custom applescript that autosyncs it with my bluetooth phone. That way my phone beeps at me when I need to remember something. I’d assume most people aren’t on a Mac (safe assumtion I know), but you could do something similar if you have a bluetooth phone. Just a thought.

  22. Tracy says:

Where do you get the post-it notes that you can print on? I have searched all over the place for them and can’t find them. And what size Moleskin do these fit in?

    Thx.

  23. Tracy says:

    Steve,

Okay, I’ve printed some of these on an HP 1200 laserjet and they worked quite nicely. Thanks.

Question — how did you create these? There are some other ones in the main DIYPlanner pack that I’d like to modify to fit in this format (notably, the month across two pages and I’d like to modify the Diet & Exercise page). I don’t quite understand what is needed to do this sort of modification.

  24. I just tried it on a Laserjet 1010 — it works very well. I used original 3M post-its, pink and yellow ones.

Thank you for this great idea!

  25. Ward says:

Steve, I just came across this post and was interested in your template, but the link seems to no longer work. Do you still have the PDF available? Thanks!

  26. @Ward – I updated the link in the post.
